Simply put, bad breath is embarrassing. Not only does it hinder your enthusiasm and confidence when you’re in social and professional settings, it can also be an indicator of more serious oral health problems, such as gum disease or severe cavities. In you suffer from this common malady, come visit Dr. Isaacson at his dental practice in Oklahoma City – our team will be happy to inspect your mouth and gums during a check-up and offer you methods to effectively combat the presence of bad breath. In the meantime, here are some helpful tips:
- Bad breath (also referred to as halitosis) is caused by foul-smelling bacteria, which most commonly found on the back on the tongue, which can be hard to reach with a regular toothbrush. Investing in a tongue scraper, as well as routinely brushing and flossing, will go a long way in helping keep bad breath at bay. Attending regular check-ups is a big help as well!
- Illnesses that affect other parts of your body can also contribute to the presence of bad breath, such as gastrointestinal issues, lung disease, sinus infections, diabetes, and liver or kidney problems. If you suffer from any of these conditions, it may be worthwhile to ask Dr. Isaacson and his team about the state of your breath at your next check-up.
- Using an anti-bacterial mouthwash daily can help add an extra layer of protection against stubborn germs.
- Likewise, chewing sugarless gum can help increase the production of saliva, which is a natural cleanser.
- While having bad breath every once in a while is normal, chronic bad breath should be checked immediately with your dentist; there may be a deeper problem at work.

Did you know that April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month? When faced with so many other common oral health problems, such as cavities, structural cracks, or gum disease, it can be easy to forget that oral cancer is a threat as well. The statistics are shocking, though – This year, tens of thousands of people will be diagnosed with the disease, and half of them won’t live beyond five more years. That’s why Dr. Isaacson and his dental team are committed to thoroughly checking your mouth for signs of oral cancer every time you come in for a check-up at our Oklahoma City office. In addition, here are possible symptoms that you can look for at home:
- Flat, white or red spots or sores in the mouth that are painless
- A sudden color change in your oral tissue
- A sore in your mouth that bleeds and doesn’t show signs of healing
- An eroded area, lump, or crusty spot in the mouth
- Excessive pain, tenderness, or numbers in the mouth or lips
However, remember that your dentist should always be your first line of defense against oral cancer. While oral cancer may be incredibly destructive in its more advanced stages, patients whose symptoms are noticed by a professional early on before the disease has progressed have a much higher chance of being treated successfully. By attending a routine check-up with Dr. Isaacson once every six months, you’ll provide our team with the opportunity to keep a close eye on your teeth and gums and spot any suspicious areas.
Here in Oklahoma City, our team is committed to providing you and your family with personalized dental care that treats problems quickly and effectively. Contact us today to schedule an appointment, or if you have any questions about oral cancer. We also see patients from the surrounding OKC areas, such as Edmond, Yukon, Piedmont, Mustang, and beyond.

- Athletic mouthguards – if you or your child is an athlete, these custom made oral appliances will keep pearly whites protected against injury while they’re out on the field.

As we enter the new year, it’s important to remember that life can be unpredictable, and that sometimes, emergencies happen that need to be rectified quickly and effectively. Here at his Oklahoma city office, Dr. Joe Isaacson is committed to providing his patients excellent care, even in the most stressful or inconvenient times. In addition, there are steps you can take that will improve your condition until you can get to the office. Here are some situations you may encounter:
I knocked my tooth out
Rinse the tooth gently under water. Then, place it in the socket it fell from and hold it in place until you can get to the office. If this isn’t possible, place it in a plastic baggie of milk and bring it in, where we’ll determine whether reattachment is a viable option.
My temporary crown fell out
If you haven’t lost it, then dry your natural tooth, apply a small amount of toothpaste to the crown, and reattach it. Please call our office so that we can reattach it more effectively as soon as possible.
I broke my tooth
Rinse the tooth with warm water immediately then hold a cold compress against it. This should reduce the swelling until you can get to the office.
I have a really bad toothache
Rinse your mouth as exhaustively as possible, then floss around the tooth to make sure that debris aren’t causing the problem. If pain persists, call our office at once.
You can find more information about other emergencies here. Dr. Joe Isaacson is committed to the smiles of adults and children alike. After all, every smile is vulnerable to conditions like gum disease and tooth decay, not just mature smiles. So to help families from Oklahoma City and beyond, we offer great family dentistry services to help all age ranges.
One of the best ways we can provide preventive family dentistry is with an oral exam. During an oral exam, Dr. Isaacson can closely inspect teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay and gum disease. We also look for signs of tooth wear, which might indicate a struggle with bruxism or TMJ dysfunction, and we perform oral cancer screenings. Catching any of these conditions early lets us provide effective care sooner, when it can be more comfortable and less invasive.
With all that in mind, one way we can help you and your family is with dental sealants. This popular family dentistry service uses a thin, plastic coating to physically protect teeth from decay. A similar service – fluoride supplements – draws important minerals and nutrients to teeth, strengthening spots that have softened. With both of these, Dr. Isaacson can help patients, and especially young patients, preserve their oral health.
Other services, like nightguards and athletic mouthguards, can protect teeth in situations where they are vulnerable. And lastly, as part of our dedication to family dentistry, Dr. Isaacson and his team are always happy to recommend products or techniques for better at home care.
Has it been more than two months since you or your child’s last checkup and cleaning? Call Dr. Isaacson’s dental office in Oklahoma City to reserve an appointment. We gladly serve patients from Edmond, Yukon, Piedmont, Mustang, and beyond.
